Rising Tides is the sequel to Iron Lace which I reviewed not long ago. Her will is to be read over four days at Aurore's summer cottage on a remote bayou island to nine people. Those who don't stay will forfeit their inheritance. I have gotten some idea of the people after reading this book. It is set in the 1960's in Louisiana.

I also, sad but true, was glad that Ferris passed away the way that he did, in the hurricane away from everyone else. She gives many of her characters unique quirks to help make them interesting. It wasn't until the end that my question of why bother telling the truth was answered.
Some are family, others are strangers. Adding to the drama is the impending storm bearing down on them. I kept going because I wanted to know how it all wrapped up, but it was a struggle. Emilie Richards's many novels feature complex characterizations and in-depth explorations of social issues, a result of her training and experience as a family counselor, which contribute to her fascination with relationships of all kinds. There are reason why people act the way they do. Spaces would pop up everywhere--even in the middle of words.
However, this is no ordinary reading as the deceased, being of sound mind, left very lucid and specific instructions. They must all stay for the full 4 days of the reading of the will or they will forfeit their inheritance. And the way she described the scenes and the characters was very accurate that i'd imagined everything as if i was there or as if i'd been watching a movie. Her grandmother's lawyer then reveals that they must spend the next few days together in the summer retreat to claim their inheritances. The characters didn't seem to be as well developed for this second novel. I was pleasantly surprised that Richards Brough even more mystery to the story and fleshed out characters that played small roles in the first book. Suspicions rise when Aurore's lawyer dispenses small bequests, each designed to expose the matriarch's well-kept secrets. As a hurricane approaches and survival itself is threatened, the fourth day dawns and everyone waits for the final truth to be revealed. . The setting and the storm played well with the other plot tensions to make for a read that hooks you into staying up way past bedtime to finish. It is set in the 1960's in Louisiana.

With a savage hurricane approaching, tensions reach a dangerous climax. The author's most compelling characters were those who fought the hardest for what they believed.

I went into this one thinking there was not much left to tell of the story and the author had tied up Iron Lace pretty well. Since we were a bit off season, we had the place to ourselves, but in the middle of the night we began to hear noises. Borrow it from the library though, it's not worth buying.
