Toulouse: As the religious divide deepens in the Midi, and old friends become enemies, Minou and Piet both find themselves trapped in Toulouse, facing new dangers as sectarian tensions ignite across the city, the battle-lines are drawn in blood and the conspiracy darkens further. I folded that bit of paper and put it in a long since lost box, and made a vow to myself that I would do my utmost to follow in her literary footsteps. However, the mystery aspect of the book is minimal. Bringing sixteenth-century Languedoc vividly to life, Kate Mosse's The Burning Chambers is a gripping story of love and betrayal, mysteries and secrets; of war and adventure, conspiracies and divided loyalties. Can't wait for the second in the trilogy which sadly does not come out until 2020! As the religious divide deepens, and old friends become enemies, Minou and Piet both find themselves trapped in Toulouse, facing new dangers as tensions ignite across the city. In the small village of Puivert, a long hidden document threatens the status of its Mistress, Blanche de Bruyere who will stop at nothing to protect herself.

Three years later, Jack is still in charge ā€” of his sisters, of supporting them all, and of finding the truth about what happened to his mother. Mosse creates a thrilling portrait of life in a country where no one is safe, where everyone is a suspect and even the innocent can be arrested and tortured into confessing. For many years I went off historical novels - nothing could come close to the wonderful Dorothy Dunnett books about Francis Lymond - but recent work by Hilary Mantel, Sarah Perry and Kate Mosse have made me an enthusiastic reader of historical fiction again. The story is based in Carcassonne and then Toulouse where bitter battles were fought between the Huguenots and Catholics. Kate Mosse has returned to what she does best, the French Languedoc period, mixed with a dash of mystery, twists and violence. Kate Mosse is that rarest of writers: a storyteller who breathes fresh life into vanished worlds.

A masterly tour of history; a rapturous romance; andā€”best of allā€”a breathless thriller, alive with treachery, danger, atmosphere, and beauty. The Burning Chambers takes us back to Carcassonne and Toulouse and the French middle ages. But before Minou can decipher the mysterious message, a chance encounter with a young Huguenot convert, Piet Reydon, changes her destiny forever. I wanted the main character to spend more time at her father's bookshop and felt a little robbed when that was just a kicking off point to her story. I was told that Forever Amber was sloppy Romance so for years I never tried it but when I did I made it book of the year. Mosse has clearly put a lot of thought and care into the creation of this story, and it feels at times as though the romance element was an afterthought. This is a story of mystery, conspiracy, betrayal, love, and family secrets amidst the most turbulent of times.

It sounds magical and disturbing in equal measure. He has a great partner in Blanche, obsessed with finding Minou and safeguarding her status to the point of insanity. For Piet has a dangerous mission of his own, and he will need Minou's help if he is to get out of La CitĆ© alive. Kate kan de geschiedenis van Carcassonne op een fascinerende manier weergeven. All the while, the shadowy mistress of Puivert ChĆ¢teauā€”obsessed with uncovering the secrets of a long-hidden documentā€”strengthens her power and waits for the perfect time to strike. Nobody does it like Kate Mosse. But before Minou can decipher the mysterious message, a chance encounter with a young Huguenot convert, Piet Reydon, changes her destiny forever.

Review: The Burning Chambers

the burning chambers

I would like to thank NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review. She is also a hugely successful novelist. We have our dashing hero Piet Reydon, desperate to liberate France from the tyranny of the Catholics, to let every man chose how and what religion they wish to follow. Alongside Minou is another female character, something of a religious zealot who thinks that God speaks to her. When the women go out for drinks at the hip neighbourhood bar, they are looking for a fun break from their daily routine. This book is no exception.

Here she takes us back to France's Wars of Religion and the harrowing blood letting that took place in that historical time period, bringing back echoes of my studies of these events in European History long ago when the established Catholic Church was determined that no Huguenots should remain in the country. But before Minou can decipher the mysterious message, a chance encounter with a young Huguenot convert, Piet Reydon, changes her destiny forever. Thanks is extended to Pan Macmillan Australia for providing me with a copy of The Burning Chambers for review. The Burning Chambers is an historical fiction story. Like all Kate Moses novels, impeccably researched and rich with historical detail.

the burning chambers

From the very start we are drawn into a fascinating story of religious persecution, family secret, this, betrayal and intrigue, and star crossed love. All the while, the shadowy mistress of Puivert ChĆ¢teauā€”obsessed with uncovering the secrets of a long-hidden documentā€”strengthens her power and waits for the perfect time to strike. Just what do the words mean, who is the she? Yet the next book needs to seriously downplay the romance and up the excitement. Set in the Languedoc in the sixteenth century, this book brings to life the religious strife of the times. As the religious divide deepens, and old friends become enemies, Minou and Piet both find themselves trapped in Toulouse, facing new dangers as tensions ignite across the city. In today's standards it is very difficult to under stand Transubstantiation as it sounds very illogical. The prologue and part of the epilogue are the only two sections which relate to the larger series, the only bits which tell the reader there's more than this book as a standalone, and it's not clear that this is what they're for.
